Ancient deep ocean as a harbor of biotic innovation revealed by Carboniferous ophiuroid microfossils

چکیده

Abstract Fossil-informed molecular phylogenies have emerged as the most powerful tool for correlating biotic evolution and Earth history. The accuracy of these trees, however, depends on completeness fossil sampling. For organismal clades, available record is insufficiently sampled. This especially true groups with a multi-element skeleton, such echinoderms vertebrates, where sampling efforts focus largely rare finds intact skeletons. groups, inconspicuous but informative skeletal fragments are commonly neglected. bias excludes numerous paleoenvironments in which preservation skeletons extremely unlikely, particular deep-water settings. We describe new brittle-star, or ophiuroid, fossils retrieved from sieving residues sediments deposited during Atokan (Upper Carboniferous) deep shelf to upper slope Ardmore Basin present-day southern Oklahoma, USA. Although preserved disarticulated, microscopic ossicles, pristine microstructure allows precise identification remains. Comparative anatomical phylogenetic analyses confirm presence basal representatives extant ophiuroid orders Ophioscolecida Amphilepidida. Our provide first unambiguous evidence that early crown-group diversification Ophiuroidea was well under way long before end-Permian mass extinction, significant part this took place settings, previously predicted by evidence.

ELECTRON MICROSCOPY OF ANCIENT MICROFOSSILS Mentor:

Prof. Xiao’s current research focuses on the biological evolution and environmental changes in the Proterozoic Eon (2500 to 543 million years ago). He has been working on some of the most important and exquisitely preserved microfossils from the ca. 600-million-year-old Doushantuo Formation in South China. These microfossils include multicellular red algae and animal embryos at successive cleav...

Early allelic selection in maize as revealed by ancient DNA.

Maize was domesticated from teosinte, a wild grass, by approximately 6300 years ago in Mexico. After initial domestication, early farmers continued to select for advantageous morphological and biochemical traits in this important crop. However, the timing and sequence of character selection are, thus far, known only for morphological features discernible in corn cobs. We have analyzed three gen...

Self-assembled silica-carbonate structures and detection of ancient microfossils.

We have synthesized inorganic micron-sized filaments, whose microstucture consists of silica-coated nanometer-sized carbonate crystals, arranged with strong orientational order. They exhibit noncrystallographic, curved, helical morphologies, reminiscent of biological forms. The filaments are similar to supposed cyanobacterial microfossils from the Precambrian Warrawoona chert formation in Weste...
